I took a short trip to a local produce market Saturday and I reckon I was expecting way too much way too soon. I've been hearing about Palisade Peaches and Olathe Sweetcorn since before I got here to Colorado where they grow 'em and since it's Summer I figured they'd both be ready. uh. NOT. I should'a been able to figure that out on my own because of the "cooler than normal" weather we've had here all Spring - not to mention the "record breaking RAIN"(6.56 inches) ALREADY(!!) this year so far. Apparently the Lady at the market was tired of being asked about that shit, TOO. The middle of JULY!" she snapped when I asked. She did not add, "Dumbass!" but her expression gave away that she was thinking it. And that's okay because there are several local produce markets here in The Valley. heh heh I left Middle Tennessee before daylight March 21st. The day before I left, I did one last limb lifting and mowed so that everything was "Dress Right - DRESS", like I always tried to keep it. I also dumped 6.5" of rain, from just that week, out of the rain gauge. Sweet corn, Peaches and homegrown tomatoes come in about this time back yonder - though I always waited until after last frost to put my 'maters in the ground and considered myself lucky if I was eatin' MY 'maters before the Fourth of July. But I ain't BACK yonder. So.
My last post was about Willie's newest album and I told you that two of the cuts were covers of Guy Clark originals. THIS ... is the Guy Clark I remember best, Live at the Songwriters Showcase in Austin. Truer words wuz never sung than this ri'cheer. Okagawa Farms didn't have THESE, either! Enjoy ...

Ain't nothin' in the world that I like better
Than bacon & lettuce & homegrown tomatoes
Up in the mornin' out in the garden
Get you a ripe one don't get a hard one
Plant 'em in the spring eat 'em in the summer
All winter with out 'em's a culinary bummer
I forget all about the sweatin' & diggin'
Everytime I go out & pick me a big one
Homegrown tomatoes homegrown tomatoes
What'd life be without homegrown tomatoes
Only two things that money can't buy
That's true love & homegrown tomatoes
You can go out to eat & that's for sure
But it's nothin' a homegrown tomato won't cure
Put 'em in a salad, put 'em in a stew
You can make your very own tomato juice
Eat 'em with egss, eat 'em with gravy
Eat 'em with beans, pinto or navy
Put 'em on the side put 'em in the middle
Put a homegrown tomato on a hotcake griddle
If I's to change this life I lead
I'd be Johnny Tomato Seed
'Cause I know what this country needs
Homegrown tomatoes in every yard you see
When I die don't bury me
In a box in a cemetary
Out in the garden would be much better
I could be pushin' up homegrown tomatoes
